Young Naturalists

The Young Naturalists group is for children approximately ages 5-10 and their families.  This bi-weekly class will meet on Tuesdays from 2:30-4:30pm to explore the outdoors together and learn more about paying attention, noticing, and being curious about the world around us.   We'll learn to keep a record using notes and drawings of the changes taking place in nature through the seasons.  Please see our newsletter for our meeting place each week as we'll be exploring the natural places around the DLC.  We'll have some activities, experiments, and projects in the classroom but spend most of our time outdoors, so dress appropriately.

All children will need to bring a nature journal and a pencil with them to every class.  Your nature journal can be a spiral notebook or a few sheets of paper stapled together, or pages on a clipboard.  Make sure the journal is of a size and stiffness that your child can hold his/her journal and draw on it while standing up if needed.  I encourage parents to create a nature journal as well!

Here are some other things you might want to bring along in a small backpack (these are all optional):
  • binoculars
  • a magnifying glass
  • an eraser
  • colored pencils or other favorite drawing tools
  • clips to hold pages down on windy days
  • a small pair of scissors or a pen knife
  • sunscreen or hat
  • water bottle
